How it's calculated

The countdown is the exact calendar difference between today and your retirement date, recomputed every second. Working days counts Monday to Friday only — public holidays aren't included. "Of the way there" (birth-date mode) is the share of your life from birth to retirement already lived.

An estimate from the numbers you enter — your scheme's exact rules decide the official date. Learn the method step by step.

Examples

Example — retiring 15 March 2045, counted on 4 October 2026: 18 years, 5 months, 11 days (6,737 days in total).

Frequently asked questions

Does the countdown update live?

Yes — the seconds tick every second, and the years/months/days figure is recomputed from today's actual date each time. Leave the tab open and watch it move.

What counts as a working day?

Monday to Friday. Public holidays aren't subtracted — they vary by country, state and employer, so the figure is approximate by design.

Where is my remembered date stored?

Only in your own browser's local storage on this device. It's never sent to us or anyone else — ticking the box is the only thing that stores anything at all, and Reset clears it.

What does "of the way there" mean?

In birth-date mode, it's the share of your life from birth to your retirement date that has already passed. It only appears when you've given a birth date — with a retirement date alone, there's no start point to measure from.

My retirement date is in the past. What now?

The countdown will tell you plainly that the date has passed. Double-check for typos first — a wrong year is the usual culprit. If the date is right, congratulations: you're already there.

Can I count down to an early retirement date?

Yes — enter any date, or use birth date plus your chosen early-retirement age. For planning the early date itself, the early retirement calculator compares it against your normal retirement date.
