FERS Retirement Date Calculator
Enter your birth date and federal service start date (or years of service) to get your FERS minimum retirement age and your earliest date under each of the four eligibility combinations. Built on OPM's official rules.
How it's calculated
Your birth year sets your minimum retirement age (MRA) from OPM's schedule (55–57). Each of the four combinations then needs both its age and its service: the date shown is whichever comes later — the age date or the service-completion date. MRA with 10 years gives a reduced annuity; the other three are unreduced.
Dates only — no annuity amounts. Special provisions (law enforcement, firefighters, air traffic controllers) use different rules and aren't covered. FERS MRA, explained.
Examples
Born 15 March 1980, federal service started 1 June 2005 (MRA 57 years):
| Combination | Earliest date |
|---|---|
| MRA with 30 years of service | 15 March 2037 (Sunday) |
| Age 60 with 20 years of service | 15 March 2040 (Thursday) |
| Age 62 with 5 years of service | 15 March 2042 (Saturday) |
| MRA with 10 years of service (reduced) | 15 March 2037 (Sunday) |
The four doors to FERS retirement
- MRA + 30 years — the classic career-employee route; usually the earliest for people who joined young.
- 60 + 20 years — for mid-career joiners who reach 20 years around 60.
- 62 + 5 years — the minimum-service door; needs only 5 years.
- MRA + 10 years (reduced) — an immediate but reduced annuity; postponing to 62 can avoid the reduction.
Postal (USPS) career employees are covered by FERS too — see the USPS calculator.

Frequently asked questions
What is my MRA?
Your minimum retirement age, set by birth year: 55 if born before 1948, sliding up to 57 for those born in 1970 or later. It's the earliest age FERS lets you retire with an immediate annuity — but only with enough service years.
What does "reduced" mean for MRA + 10?
The annuity is permanently reduced for each month you're under 62 when it starts. Postponing the start date to 62 can avoid the reduction — the dates above tell you when each option opens; the amounts are between you and OPM.
Which combination should I aim for?
Usually the earliest unreduced one — for career employees that's MRA + 30. But the "best" door depends on your plans, health and finances; this tool shows the dates, and a benefits counselor can talk through the money.
Do I need at least 5 years of service?
Yes — 5 years of civilian service is the vesting minimum for any FERS annuity. With 5+ years but no immediate-retirement combination, you'd get a deferred annuity instead.
What about law enforcement, firefighters and air traffic controllers?
They have special provisions — earlier ages with 20 years of covered service — which this tool doesn't cover. Check OPM's special-provisions pages for those dates.
I was hired before 1984. Is this for me?
Probably not — employees hired before 1 January 1984 are generally under CSRS, a different system this tool doesn't cover. Most everyone hired since is under FERS.
