Retirement Age for Indian Government Employees
Central government servants retire at 60 under one nationwide rule; state government servants follow their own state's age — 58 to 62 among the states we've been able to verify from official sources.
Central government: 60, one rule nationwide
Central government servants retire at 60 under the Fundamental Rules, with the 1st-of-the-month rule setting the exact day: the last day of the month you turn 60 (previous month, if born on the 1st). The government employee calculator applies it.
State governments: each state sets its own
States set superannuation under their own service rules, and the ages move over time by government order. These are the states whose ages we've verified from official sources:
| State | Superannuation age |
|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh | 62 years |
| Assam | 60 years |
| Bihar | 60 years |
| Haryana | 58 years |
| Himachal Pradesh | 58 years |
| Karnataka | 60 years |
| Madhya Pradesh | 62 years |
| Odisha | 60 years |
| Punjab | 58 years |
| Rajasthan | 60 years |
| Telangana | 61 years |
| West Bengal | 60 years |
States not on this list show "not verified" in our tools — we publish only what official sources confirm. The state government calculator lists every verified state with its source.
Why ages change
States revise superannuation by government order — several verified states moved 58→60 or 60→62 in recent years (Andhra Pradesh to 62 in 2022, Telangana to 61 in 2021, Punjab down 60→58 in 2020). If your state's age changes, the tools' data is updated — and you can report it.

Frequently asked questions
Is 60 the retirement age for all Indian government employees?
No — only central government servants (and states that set 60). State ages range from 58 to 62 among verified states, and categories within a state can differ.
Why do states keep changing the age?
It's a policy lever — states raise it to retain experienced staff or cut it to reduce the wage bill. Changes come by government order and apply from a notified date.
What about PSU employees?
Public-sector undertakings set their own rules, often mirroring the centre but not always. Check your organization's rules — the main India calculator takes any age you enter.
